2 Chronicles 24:12
(12) To such as did the work of the service of the house of the Lord.--Heb., to the doer ('oseh) perhaps in a collective sense. Here, as in 1Chronicles 23:24, some MSS., and LXX., Syriac, and Vulgate, read the plural ('ose). So also the Arabic and Targum here. Those who had charge of the building, probably certain Levitical "inspectors of works," are meant. Vulg.: "Qui praeerant operibus domus." Comp. 2Kings 12:11 : "into the hand of the doers of the work, who were charged with the house of the Lord."

And hired.--Rather, and they (i.e., the superintendents of works) were (from time to time) hiring masons (hewers) and carpenters. (See 1Chronicles 22:15.)

To mend--i.e., to repair (2Chronicles 24:4).

The chronicler has abridged here considerably. (Comp. 2Kings 12:12.)

Verse 12. - Gave it to such as did the work of the service; i.e. the persons responsible for the work, or "that had the oversight of it" (2 Kings 12:11). Carpenters. It is preferable to render here literally workmen or workers. Probably this clause purports that those responsible, as above, hired masons and workmen. And also such as wrought. Supply the preposition found in the Hebrew text, "to" before "such," and render again the same word (חָרָשֵׁי) literally, workers of iron and brass.

24:1-14 Joash is more zealous about the repair of the temple than Jehoiada himself. It is easier to build temples, than to be temples to God. But the repairing of places for public worship is a good work, which all should promote. And many a good work would be done that now lies undone, if active men would put it forward. And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the Lord,.... That is, they gave it to those who were overseers of them, to pay them with it, 2 Kings 12:11.

and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the Lord see 2 Kings 12:12.

and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the Lord; where it required any work of that kind.
